Abstract

Fauvel the horse, symbol of the combined Vices, embarks on an insane adventure : to woo the hand of Dame Fortune, who brutally rebuffs him, hurling abuse and sarcasm his way. The version of the Roman de Fauvel contained in the Bnf fr. 146 manuscript inserts at this key moment of the poem, rewritten from that of Gervais du Bus, a lengthy interpolation of over 700 verses that amplify the amorous yearnings of the rejected suitor. While this is not the literal fable of the donkey and the lyre ( l'âne à la lyre ) the situation appears ideal to pinpoint traces of pastiche, especially because the lament is enriched with addition of lyrical quotations and musical pieces. The challenge is to discover the textual, iconographic, etc. indices of disjunctive imitation. In so analyzing we realize that despite the overall evidence, a precise perception is fraught with obstacles : it is difficult to discern the exact lines of demarcation between pastiche, parody and satire and the subjective aspect of interpretation prevails.
